String Quartet No. 7
in F Sharp Minor
Op. 108
I. Allegretto
II. Lento
III. Allegro
In terms of duration, this is Shostakovich’s smallest quartet: only 11-12 minutes. But much has been said in it, and said in a new way. In the Seventh Quartet (and at the same time the First Cello Concert was being created), a new stage in the creative evolution of the great musician was clearly outlined.
Quartet No. 7 was completed in March 1960. The premiere took place on May 15, 1960 in Leningrad, in the Small Hall named after M.I. Glinka, and on September 17 of the same year the quartet was performed by the Beethoven Quartet in Moscow, in the Small Hall of the Conservatory.
Dedication: “In Memory of Nina Vasilievna Shostakovich”.
